The 1983 Honda ATC200X
(Auto-X modified)
The Honda ATC200X Auto-X has been the most popular modification for engine swaps in 3 wheelers ever - PERIOD. First generation ATC200X models (1983 - 1985) make-up the chassis, and the motors used are ATC185, ATC185S, ATC200, ATC200S, ATC200M, and ATC200E. The modification is so simple because the 6 motors listed are all able to be directly bolted into the 200X chassis using stock motor mounts and bolts from the 200X. The entire bike is 200X except for the motor, and the rear brake pedal. The rear brake pedal can be modified from the 200X, from the donor ATC200 (E,S,M, Plain or either 185), or can be fabricated from scratch. The popularity of this model comes from a two main schools of thought. Reason #1 is that it is perfect for someone who does not know how to run a manual clutch, because the transmission has an automatic clutch, thus the name, "Auto-X". Reason #2 is that it is a cheap alternative to rebuilding / replacing a 200X motor. Simply buy a used motor (from the list above) which is generally much cheaper than a 200X motor.
Although this is not a Honda production bike, we felt the collection would not be complete without one. We used a first year 1983 Honda 200X, and a 1983 ATC200 motor. Ours has also been modified with a Goki electric start kit. We home built our foot petal and it has been working just fine. The popularity of the "Auto-X" was so great back in the 1980s that even Dirt Wheels once published an article on building one.
