` Tionesta Trikes *** 1984 ATC250R

The 1984 Honda ATC250R

The Honda 2nd generation ATC250R was a big step forward from the previous generation. Its longer travel front suspension and multilink rear suspension helped soak up bumps and jumps far better than the earlier models. The frame was physically larger. The engine and transmission pretty much remained the same from the first generation 250R. For better handling, the 2nd generation ATC250R used a taller, skinnier front tire. Introduced in 1983, the 2nd generation ATC250R shared a common tire size with the all new for 1983 ATC200X. The front tire size went from the old wide 22X11X8 to a 23.5x8x11. The new style front tire and rim really helped carve out turns mainly because there was much less sidewall roll.

Our 1984 ATC250R was bought specifically to be raced. It was completely torn down and built as a purpose racer for MX. I had the rear shock rebuilt for my weight, and I did away with the stock front forks for some updated 1986 ATC250R forks with progressive springs. This helped in the suspension department tremendously. As far as the motor goes, I went with Boyesen Power Reeds. I also put an aftermarket exhaust on it which helped the motor to breathe so much better. As for the cosmetic side of things, I went for a totally custom look. I was shooting for a western theme, and even gave this trike a name - "Maverick." While I updated performance aspects, I stuck with old school styling with the 3 colored tank. This is one of my all time favorites in the garage - mainly because of its originality, and because it fits my tastes. I really should wear my cowboy boots when I ride this model.
