The 1986 Honda ATC250R

The 1986 Honda ATC250R is my personal favorite Honda ATC. It just looks so sleek. The lines of the body styling make it look radical. It flows like no other 3-wheeler. And it's legendary, second to none 2-stroke power is simply put, awesome. The 3rd and final generation of ATC250R was a huge step forward in progress for Team Honda. Neither the Kawasaki Tecate-3, not the Yamaha Tri-Z handled as well as the ATC250R. The Tecate was faster in stock form, and the Tri-Z was larger, but neither had the feel or handling characteristics of the Honda. The leaps in technology over the 1st and 2nd generation Rs are staggering. The Engine cranked out about 1/3 more horsepower at 38 HP. The suspension was so good, in fact, that the practical design has really not changed much since 1985, when compared to modern 4-wheelers. The liquid cooled engine was legendary, and, in fact, remained in Honda's racing quad, the TRX250R until 1989 - when it was removed from production. These 3rd generation ATC250Rs are what 3 wheeler enthusiasts dream about having, and when they finally get one, it seems it is all they can think about. With just around 40,000 1985 and 1986 models made, this trike ranks in the #1 spot for that 3-wheeling feeling.
Our 1986 ATC250R was my MX race bike in the 2008 OTC Race Series. I have done some modifications to it for MX, but it does remain nearly stock other than aftermarket plastics and tank, and wheels. I was lucky enough to get a sponsor for the 2008 race season and kindly sport the Battery Warehouse logo on this bike. It is since retired from MX racing, but I still thoroughly enjoy taking it around tracks and fast woods riding. It has been a super reliable machine for me and I do plan to keep it in excellent mechanical and cosmetic shape for the rest of its life.
